9 Ways You Can Support Refugees and IDPs

The refugee crisis is constantly in the news.  It’s a big, overwhelming issue that often makes people wonder how they can possibly make a difference.  But if we’ve learned anything through our time working with IDP communities, it’s that one person can make a difference and be the source of change.  Big or small – the scope of the impact isn’t what’s important.  It’s getting up and doing something that matters.  Today, we want to share with you 9 ways that you can support refugees and IDPs.

1. Sign-up for the PS Email Newsletter

It’s easy to get lost in the myriad of news articles and clips about the refugee crisis.  Sign-up for our newsletter to get a round-up of what is happening to refugees around the world, and to hear our take on the latest news.  You’ll also get links to our newest blog posts and find out about exciting upcoming events.  Sign-up here!

2. Sign the #WithRefugees Petition

The UN’s High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) has an awesome campaign called #WithRefugees.  Sign their petition and join thousands of other people around the world calling for rights for refugees!  You can sign here.

3. Speak Out

Whether it’s by calling your local representative or writing a letter to the editor, speak out in your community about supporting refugees.  The more voices there are in support of refugees and IDPs, the better!

4. Spread the Word

Peacebuilding Solutions is dedicated to educating people about refugees and IDPs.  We believe that in order to provide the best aid possible, we need to be transparent with both the people we assist and our supporters.  One of the best ways to share news and information about refugees in through social media.  Comment, share, and retweet PS’s posts on Facebook and Twitter!

5. Volunteer at PS

PS is currently an organization of volunteers.  From writing grants to running social media to doing research, our volunteers play a vital role in carrying out our mission to provide game-changing humanitarian aid.  Want to join our team?  Check out our current opportunities here!

6. Create a Fundraiser

Looking for ways to help PS?  Consider creating a fundraiser!  Just click the fundraiser tab on our Facebook page, set your goal, and share with friends and family!  This is a great alternative to birthday presents and is a great way to celebrate an achievement!  The money you raise will go towards helping refugees and IDPs.

7. Be a Good Neighbor

Many refugees are just looking for a place to call home.  The best way you can welcome them is with open arms and a smile.  Become a neighbor and a friend, and you will give people the reassurance that they’ve come to the right place.

8. Volunteer at a Local Refugee Service

Most cities have local refugee services and centers where you can volunteer.  Often, refugees need help with things like filling out forms at places like the DMV or need help learning their way around their new hometowns.  If you can speak another language, you can help as a translator.  Contact your local refugee service to find out what sort of help they need!

9. Donate

The work we do at Peacebuilding Solutions can’t be done without your support.  Currently, we’re working with a community of IDPs in Haiti, who lost their homes in the 2010 earthquake and are living in a displacement camp that most aid organizations have since left.  PS is different.  We believe that working long-term with a community allows for a better understanding of what the community wants and needs for long-term success.  You can donate here and support what we are doing!
